Dr. Bradley Hatfield is Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park where he served previously as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. He holds adjunct appointments in the campus-wide Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences (NACS) program, the Center on Aging and he holds a secondary appointment in the School of Medicine (Department of Epidemiology and Public Health). Dr. Hatfield serves as Chair of the University Athletic Council and as Faculty Athletic Representative to the Big 10 Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He received his Master of Science and PhD (1982) degrees from The Pennsylvania State University, where he was supported by the Research Council of Canada (Social Sciences and Humanities) as a doctoral fellow, and he holds a Masters degree from the College of Business at Ohio University with specialization in sports administration. His research specialization is in the psychological aspects of human performance, sport, and physical activity with a focus on brain dynamics underlying cognitive-motor performance and the impact of physical activity on cognitive function and brain aging.
He has served on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals (Psychology of Sport and Exercise; Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology; Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology) while providing grant reviewing for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Hatfield’s research has been supported by a number of federal agencies and corporations including the Department of Defense, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), the Army Research Office (ARO), Lockheed-Martin Corporation (LMCO), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, the American Heart Association (AHA), the Erickson Foundation, and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health and Information Technology. His lab is currently partnered with the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCoE), housed in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, to study human factors in piloting helicopter aircraft under challenging conditions.
Human Performance as a broad initiative to promote research and service in the medical and scientific aspects of human performance including participation from numerous units in Public Health, the UM School of Medicine, Engineering, Intercollegiate Athletics and others.
the ACSM, the Research Consortium of SHAPE America, and a charter fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP). Dr. Hatfield has served on the Football and Wellness committee of USA Football and as a performance consultant to teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), including the Washington Wizards and Capitals, respectively, as well as the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
