Ewa Golonka
Dr. Golonka is an Associate Research Scientist and member of the research faculty at the University of Maryland Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS). She received her PhD in Russian and Second Language Acquisition from Bryn Mawr College. Her BA and MA were both in Russian, from the University of Wrocław and the University of Iowa,
respectively.
Dr. Golonka's research has focused on instructed second language acquisition, cognitive aptitude, cross-training, multilingualism, technological applications for foreign language learning and teaching (including the use of Virtual Reality), and pedagogical techniques to optimize language training. She has also been involved with several projects that focus on the analysis of social media corpora, covering various media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) and languages (English, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian). Topics of this research range from investigating the role of emotions in sharing information online and studying personalities based on social media content, to analyzing linguistic variation and providing linguistic assistance to computational linguists in applying data de-identification, authorship attribution, and structural topic modeling techniques.
Dr. Golonka has over fifteen years of teaching experience at various US colleges and universities. She has taught all levels of Russian, graduate and undergraduate courses in Russian linguistics (syntax, semantics, and pragmatics), as well as courses in introductory linguistics and second language acquisition.
