Ian Phillips is an ARLIS affiliate and former post-doctoral associate at UMD ARLIS, working on human performance augmentation using non-invasive peripheral nerve stimulation.
Ian received his B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Spanish from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from the City University of New York Graduate Center (CUNY GC). Ian joined ARLIS in 2018 to work on the DARPA Targeted Neuroplasticity Training (TNT) program, assessing the use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tNVS) to enhance foreign language learning. Before that, he managed the Second Language Acquisition Lab at CUNY Graduate Center, where he led projects examining real-time bilingual sentence processing using behavioral and electrophysiological measures and served as a GC Digital Fellow, where he developed training and institution-wide initiatives to support faculty and students’ use of new digital technologies in their research and teaching. Ian’s research interests include human cognitive performance assessment and augmentation, second/foreign language acquisition, and sentence processing.
