Graduate Research Assistantships

The University of Maryland’s Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) has openings for graduate research assistants (GRAs) across a variety of projects. ARLIS is a laboratory operated by the University of Maryland and charted by the United States Government to establish core scientific competencies in three areas important to national security and wellbeing: Social and Behavioral Science; Augmentation, Autonomy and Applied AI; and Data and Computational Infrastructure and applications. ARLIS’s projects typically are larger-scale applied and use-inspired research and development efforts, customer-focused, and involve interdisciplinary teams.

Openings for ARLIS GRAs exist in the following subjects and mission areas:

  • Verification, validation, test, and evaluation of autonomy and AI;
  • Cognitive security, cyber-security, social media, media analytics;
  • Manufacturing, Industry 4.0, model-based systems engineering, digital supply chains:
  • Linguistics, sentiment analysis, cultural analytics; and,
  • Experiment design, human factors, human-computer interaction.

ARLIS is particularly interested in graduate research assistants with the following disciplinary expertise:

  • Computer Science, Information Science & Engineering -- AI, HCI, HPC, data science, data and knowledge engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, media analysis and forensics, information systems design, GIS;
  • Mathematics and Statistics -- Data analytics, experimental design, graph analytics, applications to social science;
  • Social & Behavioral sciences including anthropology, cognitive/neuroscience & psychology, criminal justice; and,
  • Data and Library Sciences -- Data curation, tagging, metadata, repositories, social media analytics, etc;

Exceptional students in other areas would also be considered.

Successful applicants will currently be enrolled as a PhD student in a relevant program at the University of Maryland at College Park; ideally past their doctoral preliminary exams; have research accomplishments and interests that align with, or complement, the program needs at ARLIS; and be United States citizens. Ideally, ARLIS seeks candidates for whom the technical activities under an ARLIS Fellowship will augment and enhance the basic research activities being conducted under the supervision of their academic advisor toward the successful completion of their doctorate. As needed, ARLIS will coordinate directly with the Fellow’s academic advisor to enhance the educational and research experience of the Fellow.

ARLIS Graduate Research Fellowships

ARLIS Fellowships are full-time graduate research assistantships, offering financial support in the form of tuition remission and a stipend and are annually renewable based on performance and available funding. As with standard University of Maryland GRA positions, awardees are expected to work 20 hours a week with their ARLIS research supervisor on project-directed activities. Stipend levels for 2022-2023 are $3,400/month ($40,800/year), equivalent to those for the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG), as is the requirement that applicants to become an ARLIS Fellow must also hold United States citizenship.

The fellowship also includes remission for up to nine credits of tuition and a $2,500/year travel allowance. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue on a rolling basis. Start dates would be aligned with the academic calendar as needed.

For consideration please send a single PDF with a cover letter, resume/CV, transcripts (unofficial is fine), copies of 1-2 relevant publications or written works, and names of three references to arlis-fellows@arlis.umd.edu.
