The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland is proud to announce that Dr. Tom Hedberg, Director of the Advanced Computing & Emerging Technologies Division, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), one of the highest professional distinctions in the field of mechanical engineering.
This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Hedberg’s exceptional achievements in digital engineering, model-based enterprise (MBE), and smart manufacturing. He now joins a distinguished group of just 3,385 ASME Fellows out of more than 72,000 members worldwide.
Dr. Hedberg’s election celebrates his outstanding contributions to advancing digital transformation in engineering. At the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he led the Model-Based Enterprise program, pioneering efforts to connect data across the product lifecycle through digital threads. His co-leadership of the NIST Smart Manufacturing Systems Test Bed earned him the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal, the agency’s highest honor.
As Founding Chair of the ASME MBE Standards Committee, Dr. Hedberg played a key role in shaping national and international standards that promote interoperability and efficiency in modern manufacturing. His technical leadership accelerated the adoption of next-generation digital solutions across the industry.
Dr. Hedberg holds a B.S. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University, an M.Eng. in Engineering Management with a concentration in Systems Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Arizona and Maryland.
Election to ASME Fellow is reserved for individuals who have made lasting, peer-recognized contributions to the field. This honor not only reflects Dr. Hedberg’s remarkable career but also positions him to further shape the future of mechanical engineering through continued leadership and innovation.
