Mike Matthaeus is a senior faculty research specialist focusing on Cognitive Security and Disinformation. Matthaeus leads the user interface team for the Information Competition Simulator, with a primary research focus on evolving the prototype system to mirror best practices, doctrinal concepts, and user needs through a community of influence practitioners. He manages the international community of interest (I&I Seminar series) with the Australian Ministry of Defense and affiliated Australian Universities to expand opportunities for international collaboration. Matthaeus leverages his expertise with the United States Special Operations Command and the Cyber National Mission Force to ensure ARLIS’ technical solutions meet evolving cyber-based influence demands and remain mission-relevant. Mike directly interfaces with the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School to incorporate influence training with Special Operations Forces.
After being commissioned from the U.S. Army’s Officer Candidate School in 2011, Matthaeus spent eleven years in the Infantry, Military Intelligence, and Psychological Operations regiment. Notably, he served multiple tours as a Psychological Operations team leader in the Cyber National Mission Force, providing integrated cyber-enabled influence plans in crisis and national defense. Currently, he is a Captain in the Army Reserve and serves as a Joint Plans Analyst and Information Operations Officer with USCYBERCOM. Matthaeus continues to study and analyze the confluence of cyberspace and influence and is specifically interested in hyper-enabled criminal behavior in liminal warfare.
Originally from Delaware, Matthaeus and his wife live in Annapolis where they like to spend time with family, struggle with at-home DIY or paddling in the bay. As an avid triathlete and amateur endurance athlete, he is often traveling to races or events on the weekend.
